Joe decides to instead pursue his old flame Iris Dawn just as Miss Healy begins to genuinely fall in love with him.

The two fall for one another, but when love and happiness risk taking Tira from the stage, her boss plots to break off the engagement and shackle her to the circus forever.

In turn-of-the-century New York City, con artist Peaches O'Day gets into trouble with the law for trying to sell the Brooklyn Bridge, but Jim McCarey, a police captain, likes her enough that he lets her off with a promise from Peaches to leave town. She hatches a scheme instead with the wealthy Van Doon and butler Graves to perform as a singer, calling herself Fifi, disguised in a black wig.

When she returns unharmed, and is later seen kissing the bandit, she is tried by a judge and thrown out of town. On a train she meets a con man, Cuthbert J. Twillie. Mistaking him for a wealthy man, Lee marries him on the spot. From there the two engage in a series of petty cons and deceits that bring Twillie ever closer to the gallows.

Myron Breckinridge flies to Europe to get a sex-change operation and is transformed into the beautiful Myra. She travels to Hollywood, meets up with her rich Uncle Buck (John Huston) and, claiming to be Myron's widow, demands money. Instead, Buck gives Myra a job in his acting school. There, Myra meets aspiring actor Rusty and his girlfriend, Mary Ann. With Myra as catalyst, the trio begin to outrageously expand their sexual horizons.
